Sonicly, SUDA tried to cover the whole spectrum. You would find the band employing drones, ambient sounds, warm textures and ear bleeding noises. All this, in turn, was supported by the band's powerful, low end groove. For these musicians dynamics was where it's at: during a live set you'd have the guys raging, tearing it up one moment only to find them chilling out the next. (Effortlessly.) This elaborate sound translated well into the live environment - almost too well. Many people commented on the band's huge sound describing it as almost overwhelming. Top 40 magazine had this to say about SUDA: "SUDA is one of the heaviest and most accomplished new bands on the Cape Town music scene. It didn't end there. SUDA was aiming to forge a fresh and modern sound. The band would keep streamlining itself, detaching its sound more and more from conventional guitar music. Expressing yourself in a style and sound as established as the genre of guitar music is a challenge. There are so many stereotypes and clichés that makes the genre easily marketable, but at the same time drains its impact and competitiveness towards other types of music. The guitar is god! Maybe not in the way that it is coming across these days, but in the way that SUDA strived for it to be. Creatively SUDA continued to expand and explore its scope, so much so that such distinct styles as noise improv and even tinges of jazz appeared in new material - which seemed to have more of an instrumental quality (being a blend of such diverse styles). All of these concepts were focused on loosely seeing that the band was on a constant quest for musical freedom. It was no small feat, but these artists were up for it. Lyricly, SUDA was about anything concerning the human condition. Lyrics had an abstract edge, leaving them open to interpretation. Again, SUDA tried to stay as open ended and unrestrained creatively as possible. Often other media such as film, poetry and photography also served as inspiration - and it showed! |
